Holiday Gift Idea: A Mobile Detail or Ceramic Coating for Someone Who Has Everything

By Jaisen Ostrom

Hey! It's early November, Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and the holiday shopping season is already kicking into gear. If you're staring at a list of people who already own everything, a mobile detail or ceramic coating is one of those gifts that actually gets used. Here's how I'd think about it if you're buying for someone on the Eastside.

Why a detail makes a good gift

Most people don't buy themselves a full detail. They keep meaning to, then the week gets busy, it rains for three days straight, and the car stays the way it is. A gift takes that decision off their plate.

It also doesn't add another thing to a closet. I come to their driveway or office in Kirkland, Bellevue, Redmond, or wherever they are on the Eastside. They don't have to drop the car off somewhere and arrange a ride home. For a lot of busy parents, professionals, and folks who just don't want one more errand, that convenience is half the gift.

And honestly, a clean, protected car feels good every time you get in it. That lasts longer than most stuff under the tree.

Which level works as a gift

I offer three main packages. Prices are by vehicle size (sedan/coupe, SUV/truck, or XL truck), and tax is not included. You can see the full breakdown on my pricing page. If you want a deeper comparison, I also wrote Level 1 vs Level 2 vs Level 3: Which Detail Is Right for Your Car?.

Level 1: the all-around refresh

Level 1 is $300 for a sedan or coupe, $340 for an SUV or truck, and $400 for an XL truck. It takes about 4 hours. You get a full clean inside and out, a clay bar treatment, and a layer of wax or sealant applied by hand.

This is a great gift when someone just wants the car to look and feel fresh again before the holidays: Thanksgiving guests in the back seat, holiday parties, airport runs. The wax lasts a few months, so they'll get through the busiest part of the season with a nice finish.

Level 2: polish plus a one-year ceramic

Level 2 is $500 / $600 / $700 for sedan, SUV-truck, and XL. It includes everything in Level 1, plus a one-step polish to knock down light scratches and bring the color back, a one-year ceramic coating on the exterior paint and plastics, rain repellent on the windows, and sap or tar removal.

This is the sweet spot for a lot of gift shoppers. It's a real upgrade from a wash-and-wax, and the ceramic and rain repellent are things people notice every rainy Eastside morning. If the person you're buying for drives I-405 or SR-520 a lot, they'll appreciate how much easier the glass and paint are to keep clean.

Level 3: the big ceramic coating gift

Level 3 Ceramic is $1500 / $2000 / $2500. It includes a three-step cut, compound, and polish, then a ceramic coating with about 3 to 5 years of protection. Plan on roughly 9 to 12 hours on site.

This is the "they really have everything" gift. You're not just cleaning the car. You're restoring the paint and locking in protection for years. If you've been wondering whether a coating makes sense in our climate, I broke that down in Is Ceramic Coating Worth It in the Pacific Northwest?.

How to book it for someone else

People ask me this every year, so here's the simple version.

You don't need to surprise them with me showing up unannounced (unless you know they'd love that). Most of the time it works better to give them the gift, then let them pick a day that fits their schedule. I can hold a gift note or receipt for you, and they can book through my Calendly link or just text me.

A few practical tips:

  • Ask about the vehicle. Sedan vs SUV vs XL truck changes the price, and it helps me plan the right amount of time.

  • Check the calendar early. November and December fill up with people getting ready for Thanksgiving travel, holiday parties, and family visits. If you want a specific week, book ahead.

  • Tell me it's a gift. Happy to coordinate quietly with you on timing, parking, and whether they know I'm coming.

  • Pick a dry-ish stretch if you can. I work in our weather all the time, but a break between storms is nicer for a coating day, especially Level 3.

Timing for Thanksgiving and the rest of the holidays

If you're thinking Thanksgiving week, a Level 1 a few days before guests arrive is a popular ask. The interior gets emptied and cleaned, the mats come out, and the car feels ready for extra passengers and longer drives.

If the gift is more of a Christmas or New Year thing, Level 2 or Level 3 gives them something that carries into winter. Road film, wet leaves, and cold morning glass are all easier to deal with when the paint and windows have real protection on them.

Either way, you don't have to wait until December. Early November is actually a smart time to lock in a spot before the rush.

What I'd gift, depending on the person

  • Busy parent or daily commuter: Level 1 or Level 2. They'll feel the difference the next morning.

  • Someone who loves their car: Level 2, or Level 3 if they've talked about wanting a coating.

  • New car owner: Level 3 is a strong move. Protecting fresh paint early is easier than fixing neglect later.

  • Couple or household with two cars: Gift one Level 1 now and plan the other for after the holidays, or go Level 2 on the car that gets driven most.

There's no wrong answer here. I'd rather you pick the level that matches how they use the car than stretch for something they won't maintain.
